Please prioritize all road users’ safe use of the road.
Very much support this.
Would really love to see this happen to support businesses. More folks in the neighborhood would shop if they could access this area by bike!! Make it more family friendly!!!
Build bike lanes on Hawthorne
When people still feel unsafe on transit this summer it will be a great time to get more of them onto bicycles, if we make it safer to do so.
I've had more near-miss accidents on my bike on Hawthorne between Grand and 12th than anywhere else in the city.
If we don't do some *radical* tactical urbanism AND convert many lane-miles of streets from cars to cycling and other active-transportation rolling modes right NOW, then when will we EVER do this? We have a once-a-century opportunity!!
Do this with the restriping after the sewer work that is coming up soon.
This seems like a good plan and establishes Hawthorne again as a neighbor of destination
Bike to shop. Bike to work. Bike to live... safely.
I live here and desperately want traffic calming so that pedestrians and cyclists can use the street.
I live nearby. I would use these businesses even more if I could ride directly to them!
I live on 44th, there's a lot of bad driving behaviour in this area. I often fear for my life crossing Hawthorne.
a couple of tricks of the trade. #1 label it a test project. this could been done prior to pavement overlay that has been moved to the back burner due to pandemic. use temp.removable delineation. #2 show an improvement in ADA compliance, both through access and safety. #3 show how this work will provide employment for displaced persons.
thank you all.
Thank you so much for leading this effort!! I fully support.
This would be awesome.
Great job! The website it amazing!
YES!
Increasing bike traffic would help local business and make me feel safer riding on Hawthorn.
As both a rider and a driver i’m in support of a healthier Hawthorne. I’ve seen too many, been in too many, close calls on that narrow street.
Open streets are an efficient, effective tactical response to the coronavirus pandemic, helping us maintain as healthy a city as possible in the midst of a public health and economic crisis.
Would love to see traffic calming and safer crosswalks and bike lanes
I'm curious to know how this would work out once we're back to full traffic.
Living in the Buckman neighborhood for the last 5 years, I can say Hawthorne is a dangerous road for those in the community. Any reduction in the amount or speed of auto traffic would be much appreciated.
Hawthorne is one of the heavier foot trafficked areas in the city and it’s long overdo for these kinds of changes. Ideally we should consider even closing it down to cars all together but I support this plan as a first step towards better bike infrastructure on Hawthorne. The speeds people should be driving on that street with that many pedestrians is already around the same speed cyclists generally ride at so to me this feels like a worthwhile thing to test out. Bikes should be able to take direct routes without having to divert several blocks out of the way or risking their safety taking the more direct route anyway despite the inadequate bike infrastructure.
There are special small businesses on SE Hawthorne, attracting a variety & good number of shoppers, window shoppers and pedestrians. Cars frequently zoom past because drives are in a hurry to get to a destination. Better if this street were more people friendly, as well as a street easier to cross 4 lanes of traffic.
I live in the neighborhood near the Horse Brass
YES!
We need safer, healthier streets across the city!
This is particularly essential in this time of social distancing!
It is a common sense plan. Please support it.
I ride on Hawthorne almost everyday and never feel safe. More people would use it if it were safer.
dozens of people are killed each year and these deaths are 100& preventable
I've been living and teaching here for 22 years, and have been thinking about a safer Hawthorne for everyone the entire time. Let's please make it happen. When I walk down Foster to grab a beer or some food, the change it so noticeable. The same will be said about Hawthorne.
This would be a great boost to a great area of town, Thank you.
Make this happen!!
Crossing Hawthorne yesterday (Sunday) a pickup blew by going at least 45mph at 27th. It's just getting old.
I would love to see more bike lanes and have drivers be more aware of sharing the road...
This is an absolute must. It is heartbreaking when bikers are in accidents. In this neighborhood many have children on their bikes as well.
Let’s slow traffic. Thanks
Love this!
1. This is a fantastic website for the cause. It does a great job conveying what this is all about, all reasons I support.
2. I'm concerned about cross traffic turning, for blocking traffic and potentially being dangerous for cyclists who may be less visible and traveling at higher speeds.
3. Love the physical distancing implications here. This will be huge for making this a safer place on so many levels.

Yes please! Hawthorne needs to be better in every sense of the word. There's more activity along some stretches of it in terms of pedestrians and bikes than in most of downtown.
Thanks for working on this! Hawthorne is supposedly 25 miles per hour but most don't respect that - a bike lane and slowing traffic would be wonderful!
Hawthorne is far too busy with traffic for what a vibrant cultural experience it offers on the sidewalks. I’ve lived in the Hawthorne District for 15 years and always envisioned wider sidewalks two lanes of traffic bike lands or perhaps a street car let’s bring bring the pedestrians to Hawthorne and live in up the street. Whatever it takes. Traffic is the only thing crushing the spirit of Hawthorne time for the city to move
Yes, please! My family would love to be able to bike along Hawthorne now, and would love to see less cars on Hawthorne starting now and going forward. With less cars on the roads, many are driving at even higher speeds down Hawthorne, making it more dangerous for pedestrians and bikes. Please re-direct car traffic to other streets!
I fully support this plan. For anyone with doubts, please just look at other developed countries — for instance Germany — where there have been dedicated bike paths in crowded cities for decades. Lives and economies *can* go on if you reduce car traffic and lanes, I promise! We will adjust if we are forced to do so! Having grown up in Berlin, I am too fearful to ride my bike here in “bike-friendly” Portland, or let my child ride her bike, because of proximity to cars and lack of lanes. To an outsider, there is nothing “bike-friendly” about Portland except for the multitudes of brave souls risking their lives riding their bikes among SUVs and distracted drivers. Let’s please get serious about truly becoming a healthier, biking city: incentivize and prioritize walking, public transport, and cycling, starting with basic bike lanes and creating car-free or car-reduced spaces. Thank you!
Hawthorne is the heart of the Southeast Portland community, and needs to be safe and comfortable for all users, which will also help the businesses thrive!
Also for Caesar E, Belmont and Burnside— all main streets. I’m always concerned when biking with my toddler despite my adhering to all biking laws and safety tips. Biking lanes would make my family feel much safer.
I live on SE Salmon St. and Cesar Chavez. I ride a bike.
I would like to see a Hawthorne Ave that's more welcoming to pedestrians and bicyclists.
Yes! Yes! YES!
What took you so long?
Also, PLEASE keep parks open for people and closed for cars permanently. (I know it’s a different bureau, but you people talk to each other, am I right?)
This. And traffic calming on bicycle greenways like SE 41st.
Yes please! We spent a month in Amsterdam a couple of years ago and couldn’t believe the efficient and beautiful ways that biking was worked into the infrastructure. Since we’ve been back, we’ve been biking lots more but wish we could feel safer.
A safe connection to the diagonal into Ladd's to head down to the Springwater Corridor too. And a way to cross Hawthorne to Clay when traveling westbound at 12th Ave.
It should likely be quieter as well.
Great idea - I want to shop at these local businesses and test/demonstrate a long term solutions
I love this idea to make a safer travel corridor on Hawthorne St!!
This is long over due.
I’ve seen this implemented in many places and it works.
I look forward to being able to walk and or bike down Hawthorne and feeling safe.
Safer healthier Hawthorne. I’m all for it!
I think this is an amazing concept and would greatly help the small business along Hawthorn thrive.
I live close and rarely go there because it’s hard to park and feels very hectic.
If I could bike there safely, I would go all the time!
Thanks for working on this!
Very exciting!!
This would be a massive improvement. As currently configured, Hawthorne is unnecessarily dangerous for pedestrians and cyclists.
Cool.
Yes! Let's make more space for people! Love to see dedicated bus lanes in the future, but this temporary plan seems a reasonable fit to the current moment, and gives us the flexibility to adapt over time. "Reaffirming Hawthorne as a neighborhood main street and not a highway" is so important. Parking removal should be split between wider sidewalks (which should be permanent) and the dedicated bike space. Sidewalks here are way too narrow, even in the before times when we weren't trying to be so distant from each other.
Studies have shown walk and bike friendly streets increase commercial business. People will shop where they feel safe. Thanks.
This is so important! Let this incredible street flourish!
Let's make Portland liveable! crossings on Columbia, MLK, Powell, and all the major streets! Fessenden is a great example of how to slow people down- from 35 to 45 to 20-25. Now it's safe to cross!
Can’t wait to be able to bike on Hawthorne!
yes!
I support redesigning Hawthorne to make it safer to bike walk and shop.
I support this effort to make Hawthorne Blvd safer for all users!
We need a Hawthorne that works for everyone, not just car drivers. Please prioritize busses, bikes, and walking on this crucial corridor!
By making streets feel safer, I think it will encourage more people to bike. Plus, it will help build a great sense of community.
A few months ago 2 of my daughters were nearly hit on Hawethorne in a cross walk by a person in a car escaping a hit and run (fender bender) we whipped his car around and headed for a side street making eye contact with our 17 year old exchange student who grabbed my 11 year old walking across the street with her and pulled her out of the way as she jumped out of the way. She felt the guy made eye contact with her and then gunned it right at them. We called the police but never got the promised call back from the detective or replies to the email we were told to send. Its not safe on Hawthorne for the public until things change
This is a the only way to save the commercial strip that is Hawthorne in an age of Covid-19. With the narrow sidewalks, people will be scared to walk as there is no passing space if parked cars are there. If radical redesigned streets like proposed are not implemented rapidly, we are at risk of losing our locally owned businesses. This proposal has overwhelming business community support. Listen to them over the neighborhood Associations who fear change to such an extreme that there will never be consensus with the four no matter how much outreach is done.
You read my mind. Thank you! Great plan to make the street safer and more user friendly in all ways.
Make Hawthorne a people oriented Complete Street!
As a student of architecture and urban planning in Portland, I stand firm in the conviction that bike lanes are not only needed to ensure a healthier Hawthorne for the duration of this pandemic, but must also be a part of a permanent layout for Hawthorne after the Paint and Pave project. Portland has invested well across town transit solutions through the MAX and biking greenways: all effective and admirable achievements. But Hawthorne is a main commercial and tourism zone, not a major East-West arterial like Powell. It’s engineering should reflect that. It should be designed to be accessible by bike, and allow cyclists to access the many grocery stores, boutiques, and restaurants along its length. Please support this project, City of Portland.
While I don’t live off Hawthorne I am 86 and a frequent shopper at the many specialty shops along Hawthorne. I use mobility devices and the skinny sidewalks on Hawthorne are hard for me and share space with others. I like this plan because it would allow people to pass me in the bike lane if needed, and would allow people to bike around without being hurt. Please allow this, commissioners.
Please support this project. My grandson bike and I worry much for his safety. He likes the Hawthorne area and it scares me when he go out.
I am a residential home stager who frequently works in the Inner Eastside. As such, I am usually in a box truck or pick-up towing a trailer. The current width of lanes on Hawthorne is insufficient for delivery services like mine. We need wider lanes on Hawthorne, and while I know that means less of them, the increased safety and ease of access for commercial vehicles in the area will be well worth it. Ideally, operations like mine would be given right of way through the corridor along with transit. But getting people out of cars and onto bikes will clear up the street for vehicles that need it most. Portlanders want to bike, and they will use those lanes if you build them.
I hope this can not only be implemented, but eventually become permanent. This would go a long way to making Hawthorne a vibrant place for people, instead of an awkward freeway for cars.
this would be great!
This would be a dream come true.
The Thai Touch family supports Healthier Hawthorne!
The two lanes, as they currently are, are so narrow uhaul sized trucks scrape parked cars.
I have seen it.
One, wider, lane would be safer. Reduce the speed limit to make it less attractive for trucks.
This is a fantastic vision for a safer more vibrant Hawthorne.
i live near hawthorne
Yes the cars will get 'jammed up' although I prefer the term 'calmed'. Hawthorne is a frightening road to drive because there are so many pedestrians and bikes. All the cars go so fast that I will not take the time to park and I never ride my bicycle there. This traffic calming will make the neighborhood one to visit and enjoy again.
Lets give it a try....
It has to work for buses, but I agree that this is the right time to test something. Anything, really!
I wonder if a three-lane cross section is better...but to accomplish either more walking space or dedicated bike space you'd have to drop the car parking. In the end, something's gotta give!
Very good idea!
Healthier Hawthorne...our family 100% approves! Thank you!
I own a business on Hawthorne and I fully support this!
I am a business owner on Hawthorne. I believe this would be an upgrade to the neighborhood. I’ve seen some horrible accidents on Hawthorne in my 20 years of being here. This could be a model for future neighborhoods.
I personally support this, and I also support this as a candidate for Portland City Council Position 2. I wish I'd heard about it sooner!
I am a cyclist who generally avoids riding on Hawthorne in favor of rather roundabout ways to get to the businesses I know of on that street. I would be delighted to see these changes made, and would probably discover even more to like on Hawthorne than I have so far by the increased cycle access along the corridor.
Been a long time shopper/ theatre goer along this commercial corridor since ether 90s. This is one of the best worse commercial corridors in the city: it could be so much more if the City and the Hawthorne powers that be just moved forward on its out of date and dangerous street configuration. We all know better know...this is not the 80s or 90s. When I drive it, park on in, bike it, bus it, walk across it...I always come away with the dread that it "fails for all", works for no one well and its no longer a fun place to be so i avoid it much more than go to it. There are other places with safer and more friendly streets.
Yes!
No more deaths on Hawthorne
We are the owners of Pepino's. Like the idea, just want to make sure it is safe for pedestrians and cyclists.
I wholeheartedly support this. Not only have I witnessed people get hit by cars on Hawthorne, I've also experienced the wonder of the street during major snow events where the streets are filled with people instead of cars.
As an HD42 precinct committeeman, I highly support this initiative.
I was almost hit by a car.
Yes please bike lanes!!
This is a great idea! We live near 22nd and Hawthorne and would like to advocate for a cross walk between jam on Hawthorne and grand central bakery. Those restaurants, along with Hotlips, drive a ton of pedestrian traffic. With how fast people drive on that section of Hawthorne, I am surprised there are not more accidents on those sunny weekend times, when upwards of 2 dozen people can be standing on the corner.
Wonderful idea!
I have lived in the Hawthorne area for 30 years, and am very excited about this plan!!!!
This would be awesome!
I live locally with two you children and a safer Hawthorne would allow us to support local businesses more that is currently possible.
I like this idea and am excited to see it implemented!
I work on Hawthorne and think this is a great idea.
As a person whom exclusively travels around Portland on Bicycle, I have come to rely on trusted Bike routes and lanes to maintain my safety as I conduct my business. Hawthorne is an awesome street but the amount and average speed of the car traffic is daunting. I have also seen many near misses with pedestrians as they attempt to use the crosswalks. Safe, Cheap, and obvious protected lanes make sense for the continuing health and safety of SE Portland. -Christopher Fuchs
As someone who both bikes AND drives around Portland, I would feel safer with bike lanes on Hawthorne. When I'm driving, I want to make sure that I can clearly see where my fellow Portlanders are, and bike lanes help with that immensely. I hope you do put bike lanes on Hawthorne!
Yes please.
I think this is a fantastic idea! I love that the bike lanes are protected from traffic by parked cars.
All for this
This is just great!
We love it!
Yes, let's do this! I lived on Hawthorne for 3 years, and the traffic and noise prompted us to move. It would be great if things improved.
I live just off Hawthorne, and would love to feel safer pulling out onto Hawthorne in a car/crossing the street as a pedestrian, etc.
It's time Portland. Let's bike to shop, bike to school, bike for health and happiness!
If this 67 year old woman can bike all around Portland maybe you can too.
I'm real excited by the idea of slowing Hawthorne down and encouraging more pedestrian and bike traffic to increase revenue for the awesome local businesses!
I would love to skate and bike on Hawthorne with my family!
This is my neighborhood. And Hawthorne has become scarier and scarier to cross on foot. The current configuration no longer works. As for bicycling, that is my main mode of transportation and I use the side streets not the main street of my neighborhood. I welcome a healthier Hawthorne
Yes to more protected (no just paint) bike infrastructure. Build for ages 8-80
Thanks for spearheading this! I can't tell you what businesses are on Hawthorne because I can't ride on that street - I would gladly buy books, drinks, food, etc from multiple businesses if I could see what's there!
Increased bike traffic results in increased business along bike routes, and bike-friendly infrastructure saves lives + the planet.
I love this idea!. I am an avid cyclist and live in the inner eastside. The bike is my primary mode of transportation for all things in the city except trips where I'm moving large items. And while I live just one mile north of Hawthorne I rarely shop there because it isn't bike friendly - limited bike racks, congested sidewalks, and non-bike friendly streets. I'd go there more often for sure - mainly for Powells Books, dining and probably other I'd discover with time - if bike access were better.
I think this would be amazing for SE Portland!
Thank you for your vision!
I've been a Portland resident for a decade and a lifelong Oregonian, and I think Hawthorne is too dangerous! Give me a bike lane that is protected and you'll get more of my business at; Fred Meyer, Powell's, Por Que No, Bar Harlow, New Seasons, Next Level Burger, Quarterworld, ...
Remembering Fallon Smart
To PBOT and elected leaders: please take this opportunity to rethink Portland's transportation infrastructure and help businesses thrive in the post-pandemic world by making the neighborhood centers more attractive and safe for people! Would more people come out to shop, eat and socialize if there was more space for people rather than cars? If there was outdoor seating, wider sidewalks and bike lanes? I hope proposals like this get full attention from the city and that we can move fast to implement transportation changes despite the pandemic.
On a personal note, I live too far from Hawthorne to walk there, and I prefer not driving around the city even though I have a car. Biking on Hawthorne is dangerous as it is. As a result I hardly ever go there. I'm sure I would go if I could safely bike there!
Hawthorn is an amazing business sector but navigating the area outside of a vehicle is very unpleasant due to the proximity of a 4 lane corridor. The wide widths of the vehicle lanes promote higher speeds and reduce yielding right of way to pedestrians in crosswalks. Crossing Hawthorne as a pedestrian is very unpredictable The corridor is inappropriate for the community is is surrounded by and negatively impacts the commercial viability of the businesses. Making this a complete street with protected bicycle lanes will be a dramatic benefit to Hawthorne's safety, customer occupancy time, driver awareness and street community integration.
Yes! this has been way overdue.
Yay bikes!
So excited for this idea! Would make hawthorne so much safer (more bikes, slower drivers *hopefully*) and would be great for businesses!
People first!!
Hell to the YES!
Resident of the neighborhood. This would be great for everyone.
We need less cars and more people on bikes -to address climate change and to address our city's increasing street gridlock. Protected bike lanes are the best way to get people on bikes, because it provides the best safety and the best feeling of safety while riding.
social distancing orders!
We need protected bike lanes!!
Car culture is trying to take over Portland. We gotta stand up and fight back for safe streets! Providing protected space for cyclists will keep Hawthorne Blvd vibrant and thriving.
YES PLEASE. Please do this for EVERY small business corridor too. Like Mississippi, Alberta, etc, where cars aren't necessary to even traverse the length of the shopping district!
Now is the time for more bike lanes! They'll help us commute to work when we go back to work and reduce traffic levels in the city. Just in time for summer, too!
Let's take back our neighborhood streets !
With less traffic due to the COVID pandemic, our streets are as they should be; a safe place to bike, run and walk. We have a unique opportunity to make this temporary situation a long term realization. Let's act now while we still have time to keep the streets safe for neighborhoods and neighbors. The stop sign rolling speed demons are starting to bomb through neighborhoods again.
Thanks for you work on this,
Chris
Great idea. Hope you can make this a reality.
YAY!!!! Seems Streetmix doesn't have Green Street stormwater planters, but I'd like to see some on Hawthorne too.
Currently, Hawthorne is a disaster.
Thanks you for your work on this! Hawthorn could be so much more pleasant and safe for people :)
Makes sense to me!
Very Nice!
YAY! Bike lanes!
Go Zach! Great idea. I read the story in BikePortland.org, forwarded to me by the Editor of Streetsblog in the Oakland/San Francisco area, who's aware of and excited about what you're doing. My wife and I live in the Alberta District and used to visit Hawthorne a lot when we lived downtown. The changes you advocate for make so much sense. Cheers.
Yes, slower car traffic, and more space and safety for bikes and pedestrians !
Very much support this.
Would really love to see this happen to support businesses. More folks in the neighborhood would shop if they could access this area by bike!! Make it more family friendly!!!
