Imagine how great this would be.

Healthier Hawthorne will...

  • Give people of all ages and abilities safe, direct access to shop, dine, and commute along Hawthorne
  • Help local businesses by making it safer and easier for people to bike directly to them (many studies show that protected bike lanes are great for business)
  • Create space for pedestrians to safely pass each other while physical distancing
  • Make it much safer to cross the street
  • Make it much safer to drive (it's currently one of Portland's most high-crash streets)
  • Make the street quieter and more pleasant
  • Improve the street's air quality
  • Make Hawthorne a safer, healthier, happier, more accessible, and sustainable street for all!

How will it be done?

  • Location: The city already has plans for protected bike lanes from the bridgehead to SE 12th, so this plan proposes to continue those across the entire retail corridor, all the way to SE 50th.
  • Traffic calming: We'll reduce the number of travel lanes in each direction from 2 to 1, reaffirming Hawthorne as a neighborhood main street and not a highway.
  • Protected bike lanes: Current parking lanes will become protected bike lanes that are separate from cars and safe for people of all ages and abilities.
  • Parking and loading zones: Outer travel lanes will be converted to parking, maintaining direct storefront access for curbside pick-up, delivery, and people with disabilities.
  • Safe crossings: Parking spaces will be removed at intersections and mid-block crossings to improve visibility for drivers, cyclists, and people crossing the street
