I am a (restaurant/bar/flower shop/etc.) on SE Hawthorne Blvd. My business has served the community since 2002/2012/etc. I am writing to express my support for protected bike lanes and enhanced pedestrian infrastructure on SE Hawthorne Blvd between the Hawthorne Bridge and SE 50th Ave.
The current street design does not work for the business or residential community. SE Hawthorne Blvd. ranks on Portland Bureau of Transportation's (PBOT) high crash network list for pedestrians and bicyclists. As someone who spends lots of time on Hawthorne, I regularly see confusion, uncertainty and near-misses between pedestrians, buses, drivers, cyclists, and e-scooter riders—the latter two of which have zero safe, dedicated space in which to use the street.
I understand PBOT is moving forward with a Pave and Paint project for SE Hawthorne. I implore you to ensure protected bike lanes and bold pedestrian improvements are included in this project.
Protected bike lanes will provide an attractive, safe, environmentally-friendly, and equitable alternative to driving, bringing more people to the street and cementing Hawthorne's status as a destination business district where shoppers on all modes are encouraged to spend time.
Converting parking spaces into outdoor seating, green space, art installations, and other public amenities will make the corridor a more attractive place for people to shop, dine, and rest, significantly increasing business and sense of community.
These improvements will be a strong asset to our business corridor and should be prioritized over the inclusion and protection of car parking. Please ensure money is available in the upcoming budget to fully fund these improvements.
I urge you to ensure protected bike lanes and enhanced pedestrian infrastructure are implemented on Hawthorne Blvd. These improvements are critical as we look to make our street a better place for everyone.
Thank you,
